Steelers take control of the AFC North with wild win over the Ravens!

November 1st, 2020

It was again a tale of two halves, this time the Steelers reversed the script, after falling behind 10 points in the first half and struggling on both sides of the ball, they rallied and then held off a furious Ravens attack that saw them turn back two comeback attempts.

The Steelers coaching deserves a great amount of credit for the win. They made half time adjustments and held the Ravens to seven points in the second half after getting nearly run down in the first half and trailing by double digits. The Ravens offense is basic and seems like a middle school coach designed it, but because of the changing dynamic of the NFL as a passing league, teams don’t have enough fire power up front to slow them down and it looked like the Steelers would fall into that. The Ravens pounded out 265 yards and averaged over 5.6 yards a carry, that is more than three times what they had been giving up in previous six games. The methodical offense is tough to stop, and the Steelers struggled most of the day with stopping it.

After a tough first half, the defense turned it around and kept Lamar Jackson in check and caused four turnovers including two in the red zone. On the first passing situation of the game, Robert Spillane picked off Jackson and ran it back for a touchdown. While the front seven struggled on run defense, for the most part they had the answer for Jackson. T.J. Watt and Bud Dupree had a sack each and Dupree caused a Jackson fumble in the red zone. Stephon Tuitt anchored the front and chipped in with nine tackles and two big sacks. Rookie Alex Highsmith helped keep the momentum in the second half with a big interception. Isiah Buggs made the play of the day, stopping Lamar Jackson and causing a fumble on a mad dash play late in the fourth quarter. Buggs was filling in for an injured Tyson Alualu.

The secondary missed several big opportunities but were strong in run support. While Jackson’s numbers were mediocre, he made several key plays including converting a fourth-and-2 with a 22-yard pass, a second-and-22 and a third-and-14 and he kept the Ravens in it until the last play of the game.

Ben Roethlisberger led a struggling offense that was dormant from the second half of last week’s game to the first half of this week’s game. He went 17 for 22 for 166 yards of his 182 yards on the day. The Steelers abandoned the running game after the first half and spread the Ravens defense out going with a five-receiver set on several plays, and Roethlisberger would audible out of the play depending on what the defense showed. It was great field generalship and his play v. Jackson’s play was the key differentiator in the game. No turnovers and he played within his capabilities.

JuJu Smith-Schuster was a huge factor in the second half and made several key plays and grinded out some tough yards. He led the team in catches with seven. Chase Claypool had his seventh tough down of the season, which was the subsequent game winner and five catches. Eric Ebron had four catches and James Conner had three.

While the stats are ugly, the results aren’t. Starting with the best record in franchise history is something to behold. The Steelers made the necessary changes and bent but never broke and with a mediocre performance on both sides of the ball held off their arch-rivals.

BEER WE GO STEELERS, BEER WE GO!

My “GAME BEER” goes to: Isiah Buggs, There were players who had better stats, and even some flashier plays, but it was Buggs huge stop and forced fumble on Lamar Jackson at the end of the fourth quarter that nearly iced the Ravens. He came off his block and creamed Jackson. It was the biggest stop of the day, after Buggs at times struggled to fill in for Tyson Alualu. Also Considered: Robert Spillane who had a huge pick six to start the game, JuJu Smith-Schuster who had some of the toughest yards and catches you will see.

Where I watched the game: We had more family this week, and the “Steal the other team’s snacks”, was Maryland style Crab Cake Sliders. They were KGB’s usual outstanding fare with three dipping sauces. The Steelers scored one of their go-ahead scores in the 3rd quarter when they arrived. The beer for me was Narraganset Lager (In a “Jaws” themed can.). For KGB, Billy and Ally it was Montauk Pumpkin Beer with a cinnamon sugar rim for Dante homemade Root Beer!

My Stat of the week: It was a milestone for the Steelers most underrated person…Mike Tomlin, winning his 140th game, passing former Steeler player and coach Tony Dungy for the most wins by an African American coach. Given Dungy’s status in the NFL and Tomlin’s relationship with him, it had to be extremely gratifying. Tomlin never gets the credit he deserves and even worse he gets derided some time, because people want change for changes sake. Whatever your feeling, the numbers speak for themselves and are irrefutable, he helps the team put a quality product on the field every week and he is a great coach. I love Tony Dungy and his ties to Chuck Noll and the Steelers.

My Thoughts on next week: Scared to death. Everything I just wrote about Mike Tomlin, I stand behind. He is the best Coach in the NFL not named Bill Belichick, however his Achilles heel throughout his tenure, has been losing to inferior NFC teams on the road. Especially after beating a tough rival like the Ravens. (Plus KGB and I were supposed to be at this game.) Contrary to popular belief, next week is not a guarantee. The Steelers need to rebound on defense and put the Cowboys away early.

This week’s Jersey: Troy Polamalu, #43 Away Jersey. Always one of my favorites, the newly minted Hall of Famer jersey has filled in as my gamer a few times.

Steelers hold on to go 6-0!

October 25th, 2020

Once again it was a tale of two halves, the Steelers dominated the first two quarters and then made several key mistakes to nearly blow a 17-point lead and the game. But unlike the Broncos and Eagles games, the Steelers turned back one of the best teams in the NFL in the Titans.

There was no secret at what the Steelers needed to do, control Derrick Henry and they did just that. Henry had very little running room and rushed for just 75 yards with most of the yardage coming later in the game when the Steelers no longer loaded up the box. After an opening drive touchdown by the offense, the Steelers forced a three and out and had the Titans on their heels for the entire first half.

Vince Williams and Robert Spillane plugged the middle, “Steelhead” Heyward and Stephon Tuitt anchored the line and Henry found very little room to move. Spillane also had the tackle of the season on the goal line to stuff Henry. T. J. Watt chipped in with another sack. It was a very strong day for the run defense. The secondary struggled again allowing a few miscue big plays, but for the most part kept the Titans in check. Tannehill finished with just 220 yards (73 of them on one misplay my Minkah Fitzpatrick) and was battered most of the game. He never could get a rhythm and while the pass defense was “leaky” it held up.

The offense had a tremendous first half, but then made some key mistakes that kept the game from being a blowout. The opening drive set the tone and the Steelers moved the ball at will for most of the game. Three Ben Roethlisberger turnovers allowed the Titans to cling to life. After a great run back by Ray-Ray McCloud with seconds left in the first half, the Steelers were on the verge of putting the Titans away. Roethlisberger turned the ball over on a “quasi-Hail Mary”. He also had a huge turnover in the Red Zone after leading a 16-play seven plus minute drive that again would have put the Titans away with a little over two minutes left in the game. His performance was uneven at best and it was his worst game of the year. However, he also engineered the offense and controlled the ball converting 13-18 3rd downs and did enough to beat an undefeated team, while he didn’t play great he deserves a lot of the credit.

James Conner out gained Derrick Henry banging out 82 yards and he helped the Steelers maintain control in the first half. The Steelers didn’t take the foot off the gas in the second half, they stayed in the air, when it might have been more prudent to try and keep running on the Titans. It was a good performance by Conner.

Diontae Johnson had a great return, torching the Titans defense for nine passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns. JuJu Smith-Schuster led the team in catches and had 85 yards. Eric Ebron and Vance McDonald chipped in with a combined eight catches for 64 yards.

The coaching deserves a lot of credit. They had a very good game plan on both sides of the ball, and it was only in the execution that the Steelers struggled. While it is “not a perfect product” they now sit at 6-0 that doesn’t happen without great coaching.

Just going to say it again…the refs are WAY too involved in the game.

Hard to be upset about 6-0!

BEER WE GO STEELERS, BEER WE GO!

My “GAME BEER” goes to: Vince Williams, we often write that he is an old school middle of the pack thumper. He did not disappoint this week and he led the team in tackles and added a sack. The Steelers clobbered Derrick Henry all game. Also Considered: Robert Spillane who acquitted himself in replacing Devin Bush, Ray-Ray McCloud who has been a great find. Diontae Johnson who really gives the Steelers a dangerous weapon.

Where I watched the game: Because of Covid-19 almost all the games will be at the house with the KGB and Dante.  Last week I missed the entire game for the first time in nearly 20 years. We had a charity commitment so it was great to be back. The theme this year is “Steal the other team’s snacks!” and the fare was Nashville Hot Chicken. Absolutely phenomenal and the snacks again proved timely as the Titans never scored again when they came out! The beer for me was Bitburger Pounders and for KGB it was Montauk Pumpkin Beer with a cinnamon sugar rim!

My Stat of the week: Going with two… First the Steelers streak of 23 games without scoring an opening drive touchdown has come to an end. The Steelers engineered a 16-play drive that produced a touchdown and set the tone for the game. The other stat was 75-yards for Derrick Henry who found very little running room when it mattered most.

My Thoughts on next week: Ravens week is always a tense week. The Steelers are proficient at stopping the run, the question is are the Ravens able to pass the ball on the Steelers defense? The Ravens brought in reinforcements to help their sagging defense. Look for the usual death match.

Steelers dominate Browns!

October 19th, 2020

By Guest Blogger; Tom Janicki, Beer We Go Founder and President

After a long writing hiatus, it’s good to be back in the saddle.  Especially with our Pittsburgh Steelers toting an undefeated 5-0 record after a complete domination of the Cleveland Browns.  The Browns came into this game riding a 4-game win streak and gaining mainstream media relevancy.  For the first time in a very long time, there were serious discussions of the rivalry.  The hype leading in carried into the Browns winning…the coin toss.  The Browns deferred the kick and the Steelers controlled the line of scrimmage from the 1st to the final play of the game.  We won every facet of this game.

The play of the game was delivered by the defense early in the 1st quarter.  After the Steelers settled for a Boswell field goal to take a 3-0 lead, On the Browns opening offensive series, after two uneventful runs, Baker dropped back and completed his first pass to none other than Steelers Safety FitzMagic.  Big Play Minkah strikes again with a pick six making the score 10-0 (we have been missing this nose for the football this year).

After a series of punts and very few first downs by the Brownies the Steelers offense went back to work scoring touchdowns on consecutive drives sandwiched by a Cam Sutton Interception. Mapletron sparked the first offensive touchdown drive with a technical sideline catch which needed to be reviewed for a score but his elbow was down that led to James Conner punching it in on the next play.  The other 1st half TD came from Big Ben to James Washington who beat the Browns defense like a rented mule.  The route was on.

The only game negative that I can recall occurred in the 2nd half as Devin Bush was hustling to make a routine tackle and seemed to blow out his knee.  This will be a big blow to the middle of the defense.  Marcus Allen and Robert Spillane are not household names Z(yet) and this scares me.  I’m hopeful that this injury does not change our ridiculous run defense, however, it is hard to replace a sideline to sideline defender such as Devin Bush.  He will be missed.

Beer We Go Steelers, Beer We Go!

My “GAME BEER” goes to: I’m tempted to give this to Baker Mayfield for gift wrapping this Steelers victory, however, I’ll go with Minkah Fitzpatrick for helping us put our foot on their throat and never letting them breathe

Where I watched the game: Home Sweet Home.  Yes, it is sad to think of the impact that 2020 has dealt us.  We are typically hanging out with the Harkins crew, the Terrible Bra and Pope Yinzer on Sunday mornings then meandering our way to 524 Row A to lose our voices in the moments.  Instead, we were loaded up with Miller Lites and had a spread of food that included chicken cheese nachos, meatball hoagies and Aldi’s brand pizza (it’s acceptable to go cheap if that is what the majority of young boys prefer…).  We were joined to watch with the Foster’s (Jim, Sherry, Tate, Julian & James) and half the Hrebik’s (Jason and Jayden), Big thanks goes out to the families that accepted our invite.  The scare of the game occurred when Julian (7?) was throwing a “soft” ball into the couch and then shifted his brain into deciding to pick up the “hard” ball.  He threw the ball at half speed, which was hard, and missed the couch high which happened to be the window. Actually shocked that the window did not break from the force of the ball.  Causality of the game goes out to Tate’s JuJu jersey which occurred in the 2nd half when the game wasn’t holding the boy’s attention and they went into the backyard to play a real game.  Jayden tore the arm sleeve thus, we turned the shirt into a muscle shirt (sleeveless).  We shall see if this style will be trend worthy…keep wearing it Tate, the sleeveless JuJu has more wins in it.

My Stat of the week: The Browns came in leading the NFL in rushing offense at over 200 yards per game and our Pittsburgh Steelers held them to 75 yards on the ground.  We continue to make teams one dimensional.

My thoughts on next week: Next weeks game, Derek Henry will be our toughest test and if we can hold him down the NFL will need to be on high alert.

Steelers hold off the Eagle, improving to 4-0!

October 11th, 2020

The Steelers took a commanding lead and then had to hold off the Eagles for a hard-fought victory in the “Battle of Pennsylvania”. The game featured a breakout performance by Chase Claypool and the offense, and the defense had a bend but don’t break mentality making timely plays when needed.

Chase Claypool became the first rookie in club history and the first Steeler since Roy Jefferson to score four touchdowns in a game. Claypool had a two-yard end around that started the Steelers scoring. He also had a 32-yard touchdown reception, a five-yard screen touchdown reception and the game clinching 35-yard catch and run. He also was jobbed by the refs on a great catch, that was ruled a push off. Ray-Ray McCloud also contributed and once again proved why he made the team over Ryan Switzer. He had three catches and helped open the running game on a 58-yard reverse that completely caught the Eagle off guard. Running room was hard to find Sunday and the Eagles played stout run defense.

Ben Roethlisberger, despite being pressured, orchestrated a strong workmanlike performance. His production was less than spectacular but he managed the offense well, had no turnovers and made the throws he needed. Roethlisberger finished with an effective 239 yards and three touchdowns. Give credit to Randy Fichtner’s game plan, the Eagles pass rush was tough so the game plan was quick effective passes, screens and misdirection on the run. It worked and the Steelers put up their highest point total in the last two seasons.

The defense had another uneven performance and looked rusty after the early bye week. The tackling was suspect, and it led to several big plays including getting torched by Pittsburgh native Mike Sanders for 74-yards. There were several mistakes on the play by the Steelers. The run defense settled down and kept the Eagles under 100 yards on the ground. Stephon Tuitt doesn’t get the credit he deserves; he was a huge force in yesterday’s game and despite paltry stats, was a major factor in the win. Cam Heyward, and Tuitt provided a huge push up the middle and allowed the linebackers to make plays. T.J. Watt had an early sack and Bud Dupree contributed with a late sack, there were several opportunities, but the Steelers had trouble corralling Carson Wentz.

The secondary struggled most of the game, Mike Hilton was torched by Travis Fulghum and he ate the Steelers up with 10 catches and 152 yards. Wentz was able to convert several third and longs. Steven Nelson had two interceptions but Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds were non-factors in the game.

Mike Tomlin and his coaching staff were a major reason for the Steelers victory. They outcoached the Eagles and knew the right levers to pull to get the game back on track. The defense needs to be better and the offense looks like it is still developing, but the team seems to be evolving into a better team every week.

The referees were way to involved in the game again. They made several strange and questionable calls on both sides of it and really jammed up the pace of the game.

In the end the Steelers sit at 4-0 for the first time since 1979.

BEER WE GO STEELERS, BEER WE GO!

My “GAME BEER” goes to: DUH… Chase Claypool, who had his coming out party, scoring four touchdowns and racking up 100+ yards. The receiving corps is becoming one of the best units on the team again! Also Considered: Ray-Ray McCloud who is becoming a bigger part of the offense as well as special teams. Ben Roethlisberger who played great the whole day. Stephon Tuitt who is anchoring the defensive line.

Where I watched the game: Because of Covid we are trying to stay home as much as possible, this was bittersweet, because we were supposed to be at the game this weekend. We had Cheesesteaks in honor of the “Battle of Pennsylvania”, It was about 18 inches long and weighed about EIGHT lbs. The beer of choice was IC Light for me, KGB drank Shock Top Pumpkin (With Cinnamon Sugar) and Dante drank A&W Root Beer! I texted with my buddy Bill throughout the game!

My Stat of the week: We covered the four touchdowns by Claypool. Going with the Eagles rushing for 94 yards, the most this season against the Steelers defense. But as we often write, stats don’t always tell the story. With Mike Sanders ripping off a 74-yard drive, the Eagles finished with just 20 yards on the other 15 carries, the defense had some missed tackles and quickly recovered.

My thoughts on next week: This is a HUGE matchup. The Browns are hitting their stride and have started to make their move, the Steelers look vulnerable in the secondary and that could spell big trouble. The key is protecting Ben and sooner or later the Browns will break. Look for a gunfight!

This week’s Jersey: Ben Roethlisberger, #7, Fashion Jersey.

My Thoughts on “Next Week” updated

October 7th, 2020

The Steelers play a struggling Eagles team who scratched out their first win of the year. Look for the Steelers to smother Carson Wentz and crush the Eagles up front.

Steelers improve to 3-0

September 27th, 2020

Once again, it was a tale of two halves for the Steelers, as they rebounded from a slow start and dominated the Texans for the last 30 minutes of the game. The Steelers ran 75 plays to the Texans 47 plays, beat them in time of possession 36:51 to 23:09 and out gained them by 127 yards. They also had no turnovers for the first time in the last two seasons

The Steelers coaching staff made several important adjustments during the game. After getting torched in the first half by DeShaun Watson for 200+ yards, Keith Butler figured out the right combination of blitzes and coverages to shut out the Texans in the second half. Watson was never able to find his rhythm again and he was harassed all day. Mike Tomlin kept everyone focused and never panicked as the Steelers fell behind early. It was a great effort and it looked like Tomlin was finally going to win a challenge, he didn’t, the Steelers clearly got jobbed on a ball spot, for a first down. Even Gene Steratore agreed with Tomlin.

The defense looked dominant again up front and David Johnson had no room to run. He finished with 23 yards on 13 carries. Tyson Alualu set the point of attack and had an outstanding game, Stephon Tuitt and Cam Heyward have done a tremendous job working together and setting the tone up front. Tuitt put a thumping on Deshaun Watson.

The linebackers had a big game as well, particularly after a mediocre first half. T.J. Watt shined in the spotlight. He played within himself and was able to take what he needed in big moments, including the hit which setup Mike Hilton’s interception. The pressure on Watt was huge and he delivered in a big way. He finished with four tackles and one sack. Vince Williams put together a complete effort, even contributing in coverage. Bud Dupree continues his ascent as one of the best linebackers in football.

The offense is still a work in progress and Ben Roethlisberger still looks rusty. That being written, when they needed to make plays they did. The offensive line decimated Houston as the game went on. Chuks Okarofor handled J.J. Watt all day, the elder Watt recorded four tackles and never sniffed Roethlisberger in the pass rush. James Conner’s resurrection looks to be progressing nicely. He rushed for 109 yards and iced the game in the fourth quarter gaining massive chunks of yards.

Special teams again contributed nicely. The coverage units were spot on and held Houston in check all day. Little Bos banged out two field goals and Ray-Ray McCloud looks like a huge find.

It was the best performance for the Steelers of the season so far.

BEER WE GO STEELERS, BEER WE GO!

My “GAME BEER” goes to: Going with T.J. Watt, he dominated the “Watt Bowl” and really stepped up in the second half. Also Considered; Chuks Okorafor who nearly shut out J.J. Watt in a game that garnered national attention, James Conner who imposed his will in the second half, and Keith Butler who made the adjustments to shut out the Texans in the second half.

Where I watched the game: We got up at 6:30AM and caught a ferry back from Connecticut so we could watch at the house with Dante. KGB made Buffalo Chicken Pastries, again the snacks proved timely and they were outrageous! The beer of choice was Montauk Pumpkin Ale. Stayed in the pumpkin theme and the beer was okay, KGB made her Cinnamon Sugar Ring

My Stat of the week: 221st Regular season game, the most in Franchise history, he has had his ups and downs off the field, he gives the Steelers a chance to win every game and is the face of the franchise. I actually was trying to think about it and I believe except for his first game when he relieved Tommy Maddox, I think I have seen EVERY game that Ben has played! Also want to say a prayer for Mike Webster, who Ben passed. Iron Mike deserved a better fate, say a prayer for his family and for him!

My Thoughts on next week: (EDITORS NOTE) The Steelers- Titans game was moved due to Covid-19.

This week’s Jersey: Heath Miller, #83 Black Out, was thinking about the Steelers TE situation and both stepped up in different ways this week. One of my favorite Steelers of all time.

Steelers survive second half mistakes…beat Broncos!

September 20th, 2020

It was a tale of two halves, the Steelers dominated the first two quarters and then made several key mistakes to almost blow a 14-point lead and the game to the Denver Broncos! The Steelers had the Broncos on the ropes all day but made several key mistakes that nearly cost them victory.

It was an uneven performance for the defense on Sunday. The stats don’t tell the story of the performance either way. The defensive front played well and after some early success shut down Melvin Gordon III. T.J. Watt and Bud Dupree dominated the Broncos rookie tackles and were all over the backfield.  Watt had 2.5 sacks and disrupted several plays. Dupree had a huge game with a sack and a turnover that changed the momentum of the game. He sent Bronco’s starter Drew Lock to the bench with a legal hit. The defensive line had a very good game and Tyson Alualu recorded his first sack and looks to be fitting in well as the Nose Tackle. The front got caught a few times with misdirection, but any straight up running was all but shut down after the first quarter. Devin Bush and Vince Williams teamed up to stifle the run, but both men had tough days in coverage. Bush was targeted on the Broncos first touchdown to Noah Fant and Vince Williams gave up a touchdown to Gordon.

The secondary kept the Broncos passing game in wraps but made several key mistakes and penalties. The referees were overly involved, and it was at the point that every passed thrown resulted in some type of penalty. The biggest of which was a questionable call on Terrell Edmunds that converted a 3rd and 11. Mike Hilton had a great day but was also called on a questionable roughing the passer. The secondary held the Broncos playmakers but never looked totally in synch on the day. Joe Haden and Steven Nelson held Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton to only seven catches. Haden also had an interception that led to a Steelers field goal at the end of the half.

When the Steelers were about to drop the hammer on offense, they made two near fatal mistakes. Ben Roethlisberger had an ill-advised throw on the opening drive of the second half wasting great field position. Roethlisberger again looked rusty, but his numbers were solid passing for 311 yards and two touchdowns, but he missed some needed throws that would have sealed the Broncos fate. He hit nine different receivers including an 84-yard touchdown pass to rookie Chase Claypool. The entire receiving contributed, and each looks like they are settling into key roles. James Washington banged out some tough yards, JuJu Smith-Schuster had seven catches and looks like the possession receiver, Diontae Johnson is settling in as the playmaker. Claypool takes the top off the defense.

The other costly mistake was Benny Snell fumbling in the fourth quarter after the Steelers recorded a safety. It once again revived the Broncos from the dead and kept them in the game, they converted the fumble into a touchdown. Snell had a rough game and wasn’t the force he was just one week earlier.  James Conner came back after a first week injury and grinded out 106 very tough yards. He found very little running room most of the game, but then finally exploded for the game clinching run; a 59-yarder that finally snuffed out the Broncos.

Mark this down as well, the Special Teams contributed and were a key contributor to the Steelers victory yesterday. Ray-Ray McCloud had a 49-yard return and finished with 64 yards, proving again why he beat out the beloved Ryan Switzer. Derek Watt recorded a safety when Broncos Punter dropped a snap. The coverage units were great all day and Diontae Johnson almost had an 81-yard return when it was called back after a questionable clipping penalty on Cam Sutton. Johnson had a 24-yard kick return. The kicking game once again was a positive, with Chris Boswell hitting his only field goal attempt and Dustin Colquitt averaged 41.8 yards per punt and trapped the Broncos twice inside the 20.

It wouldn’t be a Steelers season without Mike Tomlin losing a costly and obvious challenge. The Steelers had the right game plan but just had several lapses that nearly cost them.

In the end the Steelers did enough to push their record to 2-0.

BEER WE GO STEELERS, BEER WE GO!

My “GAME BEER” goes to: Bud Dupree, while he only had one sack, his forced fumble set the tone and kept the Broncos on their heels all game. Also Considered; Terrell Edmunds who had the game winning sack. Chase Claypool for his first touchdown pass. James Conner for a great bounce back week.

Where I watched the game: At the house with the KGB and Dante. KGB made Chicken Fritters which were perfect and timely, (Steelers made a huge play when they came out.) The beer of choice was Westhampton Beach Pumpkin Ale. The whole pumpkin thing is lost on me but the beer was good! KGB made hers with a cinnamon/sugar ring.

My Stat of the week: 57,085 total career yards passing for Ben Roethlisberger eclipsing Eli Manning and moving into SEVENTH place on the All-Time list. Manning, Roethlisberger and Philip Rivers will forever be linked together, and they sit 6-7-8 on the list. Roethlisberger is still starting for his original team!

My Thoughts on next week: The Steelers struggle with Mobile Quarterbacks so that is a concern. The key is to contain Dashaun Watson and the Steelers will win handily.

This week’s Jersey: Alejandro Villanueva, #78 Color Rush, this is the ONLY comment we are going to make about NFL Social Justice initiatives. We are 100% behind social justice and we hope systematic racism is ended in our lifetime. We back Big Al all the way and whatever he feels is the best way to affect that, we support. This is a blog about football and drinking beer and we are going to keep it that way.

Steelers beat the Giants to open 2020!

September 15th, 2020

It was a familiar formula from days past, play stout defense and wait for the offense to make the plays, it worked then, and it worked last night. The Steelers played tough punishing defense, Ben Roethlisberger made timely plays in his triumphant return and Benny Snell provided the power running game.

Ben Roethlisberger looked a little out of synch in his first few series but then turned it up at the end of the second half, leading an eight play 78-yard drive that ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass to James Washington. Roethlisberger was playing in his first game in 365 days and finished 21 for 32 with 229 yards passing. He hit eight different receivers and threw three touchdowns.  JuJu Smith-Schuster had six catches with 69 yards and two touchdown passes. Diontae Johnson had six catches for 57 yards.

Benny Snell filled in for the injured James Conner, who went out in the second quarter. Snell started slowly as well but also turned it up finishing with 113 yards on the ground. He broke the Giants back with a 30-yard fourth quarter run. Setting up the final touchdown to seal the victory.

While the offense played well, the defense played outstanding and absolutely decimated the Giants running game. The Steelers front seven set the tone, holding the Giants to a field goal after a special teams fumble by Diontae Johnson. Saquon Barkley had no room to run and finished with SIX yards on 15 carries. The Giants could only muster 29 yards on 20 carries overall and were never able to get going. Once again Stephon Tuitt proved why he is so valuable. He was a difference maker and had a sack in his return after missing ten weeks last year. Tyson Alualu and Isiah Buggs acquitted themselves nicely in replacing the departed Javon Hargrave. “Steel Head” Heyward had a big interception that ended a 19 play 87 yard drive that saw the Giants come away with no points.

T.J. Watt created a huge turnover that helped setup the Steelers first touchdown. It took pressure off the offense and kept the Giants on their heels. Bud Dupree hammered Daniel Jones all night, causing the Cam Interception. When he was double teamed, the Steelers sent Mike Hilton off the corner. Dupree disrupted the Giants all game. Vince Williams was a run stuffer in the middle and Devin Bush led the team in tackles. The secondary played well for the most part and except for one lapse kept the Giants in check.

The Special teams like EVERY season is a work in progress. Diontae Johnson had a crucial fumble to start the game, Little Bos Chris Boswell missed a PAT the coverages were okay. Dustin Colquitt who recently joined the team, did a nice job booting four punts for over 180 yards. Ray-Ray McCloud had a nice return for 33 yards.

The Steelers had a very good game plan and were ready for everything the Giants threw at them!

BEER WE GO STEELERS, BEER WE GO!

My “GAME BEER” goes to: Ben Roethlisberger, when you have a Hall Of Fame Quarterback you have a chance to win every week. It was great to see Ben out there. Also Considered: Everyone of the players who contributed to the front seven. They were unstoppable.

Where I watched the game: At the house with the family and my best friend who is a Giants fan. KGB made Primanti Brothers sandwiches which were outstanding. The beer of choice was Iron City to kick it off but we switched over to Miller High Life….not a typo.

My Stat of the week: It has to be; SIX yards by all world running back Saquon Barkley. He had no room to run and was snuffed out all day.

My Thoughts on next week: The Steelers roll into the most unusual opening game in the history of Heinz Field. Covid-19 will leave Heinz Field barren. The Broncos are coming to down after a tough loss. Look for the same formula as this week, with the Steelers pressing Drew Lock into a mistake.

This week’s Jersey: Ben Roethlisberger, #7 Home, It was a tribute to a player the Steelers desperately missed.

The Steelers finish with a solid, if unspectacular draft.

April 27th, 2020

The Steelers finished Saturday’s round with four very solid prospects that can contribute. They filled depth needs and added some help on special teams: Here is our take on the Steelers haul:

124. Anthony McFarland, RB, Maryland: The Steelers addressed a need, adding running back depth, it also looks like James Conner will get one more shot at being the starter. McFarland brings speed and  one cut quickness. He should also contribute on special teams. The best ability is availability and if he stays healthy will be a great addition.

135. Kevin Dotson, G, Louisiana: This was my favorite pick of the draft and the Steelers grabbed some much needed help on the offensive line. With all the interior lineman being over 30, the Steelers needed to make an investment here. He had a Round 2 grade and is arguably the best run blocker in the draft. Give bonus points because he is a lifelong Steelers fan!

198. Antoine Brooks, Jr., Safety: Maryland: This was another classic Steelers pick, Brooks is a “tweener” defender who will play LB in the nickel but can slide to free safety or slot cornerback depending on match up needs. He will be a special teams ace and was a great value pick given his position in the draft.

232. Carlos Davis, DT, Nebraska: Given his natural size and athletic upside this was a good grab for the last pick of the draft. Davis, crushed the combine and is a classic defensive line space eater. With Javon Hargrave leaving and Mt. McCullers being unsettled, this could be a steal and he can push for an immediate spot on the team.

The Steelers also grabbed 10-undrafted Free Agents, here is a blurb on all of them-

  • Spencer Nigh, FB, Auburn – Long shot to make the team, will be a camp body.
  • Christian Montano, G, Tulane – Will add depth and youth.
  • Trajan Bandy, CB, Miami – lacks size but could contribute on special teams.
  • James Pierre, CB, Florida Atlantic – Good size and speed.
  • James Lockhart, LB Baylor – a 3-4 Outside Linebacker, could be a sleeper
  • Leo Lewis,  LB, Mississippi State – Good pedigree.
  • John Houston, LB, Southern California – Versatile prospect and the best of the three UDFA
  • Josiah Coatney, DT, Mississippi – Could move around the D-line as a 3-4 end
  • Calvin Taylor, DT, Kentucky – Brings tremendous size to a position that needs help.
  • Corliss Waitman, P, South Alabama/Mississippi State- Will compete for a roster spot
